Clayton First semester 2005 (OCL)
Synopsis: Examines the relationship between language, gender and the representation of masculinities and femininities in spoken and written texts. Topics covered include: speech styles of women and men speaking, the issue of power and gender, linguistic sexism in English and LOTEs, language reform, women and men in their speech communities, and gender and ideology. The contexts of workplace, electronic communication and education and micro-relationships are surveyed.
Assessment: Language analysis exercise (2500 words equivalent): 30% + Research project (5000 words): 50% + Take-home test (2000 words): 20%
