Master of Applied Linguistics

Course code: 3769 + Off-campus (Clayton) + Local students: Commonwealth-supported (HECS) place contributions apply + International students: unit fee $4500; course fee $18,000 full-time (per annum) (2005) + Attendance not required

The course provides students with a critical understanding of theoretical and practical issues relating to applied linguistics, including second/foreign language acquisition, language teaching, language contact and intercultural communication.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold (a) a bachelors degree with at least a credit average in the final year, or (b) a bachelors pass degree with demonstrable professional experience at a senior level in a relevant area. Such applicants will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and names of two professional referees.
Note that a major sequence in linguistics is not required as a prerequisite.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Students who have achieved a grade of credit or better in Open Learning units in applied linguistics, conducted by the Monash Linguistics Program, may be eligible for full credit, subject to approval by the Monash Faculty of Arts on a case-by-case basis.
Students who hold an honours degree with a minimum H2B grade in linguistics/applied linguistics may be eligible for advanced standing to a maximum of 36 points at fourth-year level. Students who have a Monash Graduate Certificate in Linguistics or equivalent graduate diploma may be eligible for advanced standing to a maximum of 24 points at fourth-year level, provided a credit average in the graduate certificate was achieved. (Note that the Diploma of Education is not a graduate diploma, and thus cannot be considered for advanced standing.)

Special requirements

At present, the only special requirement is that students will need access to an audiotape playback facility. It is highly recommended that students acquire email accessibility.

Course structure

The course consists of six 12-point units (72 credit points), with three core units and three electives. Students undertake units to the value of 24 points at fourth-year level in their first semester of enrolment, followed by another 24 points at either fourth or fifth-year level. In the final semester of their enrolment, students must take 24 points at fifth-year level. Students can enter the program in either the first or second semester. The course may also be taken part-time.

Alternative electives may be approved on an individual basis
Students may exit the masters program with a Postgraduate Diploma of Applied Linguistics after successful completion of 48 points (including at least two of the core units).
To qualify for the degree of Master of Applied Linguistics at Monash University, students will need to achieve a grade of credit (60 C) or above in all core units and a credit average overall.

Assessment

There are no examinations in this program. All units consist of continuous assessment, which may include a take-home test.
