Professional practice 2 (4 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate and communicate a broad and critical conceptual understanding of: 1. The pathological categorisation of tumours, their gross features and representation on medical images; 2. Principles of radiation oncology relevant to the role of the radiation therapist; 3. Current approaches to the surgical management of cancer; 4. Pathological characteristics of neoplasms and their modes of spread; 5. Medico-legal principles relevant to the practice of radiation therapyMetastasis and mechanisms of spread throughout the body. In addition, upon successful completion of the unit students will be able to accurately locate and recognize; 6. Anatomical structures of the musculoskeletal system, central nervous system, genitourinary system, respiratory and cardio-vascular systems and digestive tract demonstrated in cross section on CT and MRI images; and 7. Key radiological features of common pathologies amenable to treatment by radiation therapy.

Assessment: Written examination (one and a half hours): 40% + Image recognition exam (one hour): 40% + Assignment: 20%
