Radiation therapy planning and treatment 1 (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate and communicate a broad and critical conceptual and practical understanding of: 1. disease investigation, staging methods and the rationale underpinning clinical decision making related to: (a) skin cancer, (b) metastatic disease, unknown primaries and the implications of previous treatment, (c) bladder cancer, (d) rectal cancer and (e) palliative versus curative treatment intent choice between kilovoltage and megavoltage treatment modalities; 2. radiation therapy positioning, stabilisation and localisation methods in particular: (a) simple positioning and stabilisation methods, (b) the use of customised and standard devices, (c) the use of simple localisation methods from clinical mark up to conventional simulation using orthogonal films, (d) consideration of target volume/organ, critical/other normal tissues, imaging, patient measurement and contouring and (e) isocentric and non-isocentric techniques; 3. beam planning and shaping, plan production and dose calculation with reference to: (a) kilovoltage methods, (b) megavoltage methods and (c) fabrication of treatment accessories including standard and customised blocks and bolus; 4. radiation therapy treatment delivery methods including: (a) equipment checks, (b) plan verification, (c) record and verify systems, (d) isocentric and non-isocentric techniques, (e) isocentre/field position verification using conventional portal imaging methods and (f) patient care and early and late side effects of treatment.

Assessment: Four clinical action plans and comparative reports: 15% + Written examination (two hours): 40% + Practical assessment: 30% + Computer exercises: 15%
