Synopsis:

Objectives: Following completion of this unit, students will be able to: 1. Apply theoretical concepts of pain and pain theory when working in partnership with birthing women in health care setting 2. Demonstrate effective communication, counselling and pastoral expertise when caring for the woman and her family 3. Undertake a comprehensive assessment of the birthing woman and her baby in terms of the birthing process 4. Employ a woman centred approach to midwifery care supported by assessment and evidence based practice 5. Respect the rights, values and cultural beliefs of women and families expressed during the birthing process be creating a culturally appropriate environment for the woman and her partner 6. Demonstrate expertise in the knowledge and implementation of a variety of non pharmacological and non pharmacological pain 7. Employ reflective practice when caring for the woman and baby 8. Acknowledge the Midwives' Scope of Practice and as appropriate consult with other members of the health care team 9. Work in collaboration with other members of the health care team to provide optimum care of the birthing family 10. Document the ongoing relationship with the women that the midwifery student is following through in a way that reflects their own involvement and actions and the rationale for these, as well as the woman's actions and attitudes and responses to midwifery care 11. Demonstrate midwifery competency based upon the selection ACMI Competency Standards

Assessment: Reflective journal exercises and documentation of follow throughs - 50% Clinical skills assessments - Hurdle requirement - Pass/Fail Examination (2 hours) - 50%
