Making practice connections (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On completion of this subject the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate qualities of women-centred midwifery practice using theoretical understandings gained in the subjects With Childbearing Woman (Semester One) and The Journey (Semester Two) 2. Describe working with women in childbearing using the theoretical understandings gained in The Journey and Science in Nursing (Semesters One and Two) 3. Demonstrate developing skills necessary to provide women-centred midwifery 4. Recognise the importance of women's social context in the provision of midwifery services 5. Demonstrate beginning skills in physical assessment of women and their babies at various stages of pregnancy 6. Provide assistance to women in gaining understandings about breastfeeding, including offering support to develop skills 7. Demonstrate an understanding of the relative merits of different choices in infant nutrition 8. Demonstrate an awareness of the midwife's role by reflection on self and others related to the theoretical understandings gained in the subject Politics of Maternity Services 9. Document the ongoing relationship with the women they are following through in a way that reflects their own involvement and actions and the rationale for these, as well as the woman's actions and attitudes and responses to midwifery actions 10. Demonstrate midwifery competency based upon the ACMI Competency Standards.

Assessment: Journal exercises: 20% + Practice enquiry: 40% + Critical reflection: 40% + skills assessments + required to demonstrate a pass in all components of assessment

Contact Hours: This subject will require student attendance on campus and/or in practice for a maximum of 12 hours per week for 13 weeks. There will be time allocated in practice for students to complete clinical assessment.
