Synthetic Chemistry A (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: At the completion of this unit the participant will: - Have detailed knowledge of the structure and properties of the common functional groups contained in pharmaceuticals. - Be able to name organic molecules according to IUPAC nomenclature. - Understand the reactivity of these functional groups. - Understand basic reaction to mechanisms. - Understand basic reaction kinetics and thermodynamics relevant to organic synthesis. - Have the practical ability to perform a basic synthetic step. - Have the practical ability to isolate and purify reaction products.

Assessment: Mid-Semester Test (1 Hour) 20%; Practical Work 30%; Examination 50%;

Contact Hours: The unit includes 12 weeks of 2 Lectures per week, 1 week of 1 Lecture / 1 Tutorial, as well as 9 x 4hr Practicals.

Prerequisites: CHM1011 Chemistry, CHM1022 Chemistry, BMC1021 Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry.

Corequisites: BMC2032 Biomolecules (Structure & Function), BMC2042 Analytical Methods, BMC2071 Toxicology, BMC2050 Computational Chemistry, BMC2080 Intro to Spectroscopy and BMC2101 Drug Formulation and Delivery.
