Bachelor of Communication

Objectives

The Bachelor of Communication is a three-year professionally oriented program with an international focus, providing skills that can be utilised in areas such as mass media, public affairs and corporate communication.

Students will undertake a major of study in communication with sequences of studies in international studies and writing. In addition, students will undertake a range of elective units from the Faculty of Arts or other faculties.

Entry requirements

Refer to the current information brochure on the Bachelor of Communication. Contact the course executive for further advice on admission requirements (see contact details earlier in the Faculty of Arts section).

Students must complete at least 144 points but not more than 162 points including:
(a) a communications major of eight units (48 points)
(b) an arts minor
(c) at least three first-year arts sequences (currently: COM1010 and COM1020; JRN1902 and JRN1903; INT1010 and INT1020)
(d) at least 96 points of arts units
(e) a minimum of 36 points at third-year (including those completed in the communications major sequence)

(f) a maximum of 60 points at first year.

Unit offerings are subject to change and review. Students should always check with the faculty officers when planning their course. Some courses and units described may be altered, or may not be offered due to insufficient enrolments or changes to teaching personnel.

Communications major (core)

Students must complete at least 48 points:

• COM1020 Introduction to communications studies
• COM1010 Media studies
• COM2407 Authorship and writing
• COM2409 Media text: practices and audiences
• PRL2003 Public relations theory and process
• COM2411 Media, culture, power - theories of mass communication
• JRN2907 Radio and television journalism
• COM3413 Communications industries and policies
• COM3423 Citizens, media, audiences

Arts minor - to be chosen from writing or international studies

Writing

First-year sequence (compulsory):

• JRN1902 Newsroom practice and theory
• JRN1903 News feature writing

Plus choose at least two further units:

• WRT2405 Contemporary fiction
• COM3408 Screen theories and techniques
• WRT3421 Writing 1 - techniques
• WRT3422 Writing 2 - portfolio

and/or

International studies

First-year sequence (compulsory):

• INT1010 Contemporary worlds 1
• INT1020 Contemporary worlds 2

Plus choose at least two further units:

• INT2020 Asian studies
• INT2030/INT3030 Nationality, ethnicity and conflict
• INT3010 Managing intercultural communication
• HPL3503 International relations

Arts electives

• JRN2907 Radio and television journalism
• MAL1000 Malaysian studies
• MUS1000 Asian Music and popular culture
• MUS1040 American music and popular culture
