The diploma allows health professionals to gain sound knowledge of attitudes, skills and knowledge necessary to provide preventive health services to reduce the impact of disease and injury resulting from factors in the workplace and their extension into the community. Graduates can seek careers in occupational health, nursing or management positions within industry, government or independent professional practice. The graduate diploma articulates with the Master of Occupational and Environmental Health or the Master of Public Health.

Professional recognition

The Australasian Faculty of Occupational Medicine and the Australian College of Occupational Health Nurses has recognised the graduate diploma as meeting the coursework requirements for trainees. CME points allocated by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners are applied for each year. Accreditation with other professional bodies can be applied upon request.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have a medical degree, a bachelors degree with honours or graduate diploma, or a three-year bachelors degree with relevant professional experience in a health-related field. The department will individually assess applications from students without a three-year degree but with relevant professional experience. In such instances, the department may require completion of the Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health before enrolling in the graduate diploma.

Access to personal computing facilities is desirable but not essential, however access to the internet is required.

Attendance

Most units have a 20-hour block of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne over four days during one week of the semester. The teaching sessions involve interactive tutorials, problem-based learning, case studies and workshops.
