Photons for Communication (6 points)

Synopsis: This unit provides part of a major in experimental physics. It consists of two 12-lecture sub-units, Photonics and Radiative Electromagnetism, and laboratory work. The key areas for each sub-unit are: (1) Photonics: lasers and coherent light, modulation devices, optical waveguides, interference and holography; (2) Radiative Electromagnetism: electromagnetic waves in media, transmission lines, waveguides, antennae; and Laboratory work: experiments, simulations and report presentation on relevant topics.

Assessment: Examinations (2 x 1.5 hours): 48% + Laboratory work: 25% + Assignments: 27%

Contact Hours: An average of 2 hours lectures, one 1-hour tutorial and 3 hours of laboratory work per week

Prerequisites: PHS2011, PHS2022, MTH2010, MTH2032
