(ENG)

Leader: R Beebe

Offered:
Gippsland Second semester 2003 (OCL)

Synopsis: Knowledge of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics will be applied to understanding machines used in industry. Students will be introduced to the performance characteristics of pumps and fans, selection, field testing, solution of operating problems and modifications to improve performance. Consideration will also be given to minimising energy consumption. Performance characteristics of centrifugal compressors, gas, water and steam turbines, field testing and solution of operating problems will be covered. Attention will be given to condition monitoring applied to rotating machines, with a particular emphasis on optimisation of maintenance requirements.

Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 40% + Assignments and laboratory work: 60%

Contact Hours: 1 lecture hour and 3 tutorial/laboratory hours per week
