Computer concepts and software systems (6 points)

Synopsis: Number systems (decimal, binary, hexadecimal), computer data representation, hardware components of a computer - CPU, ALU, registers, memory, I/O devices, the fetch/execute cycle - the Little Man Computer, 80x86 architecture, memory addressing, assembly language programming, code generated by the assembler, interrupts - internal CPU, external, software, operating systems and their functions, use of the stack. (subject to approval).

Assessment: Assignments: 30% + Examination (2 hours): 70% + Students must pass the examination in order to pass the unit.

Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour laboratory per week

Prerequisites: BUS1042 or CSE1301 or equivalent

Prohibitions: CPE1002, CSE2120, CSE1307, CSE2324, CSE3324, GCO1815, GCO2812, CSE3304, CSC1030, CSC1072, RDT1400
