This course is principally designed for students seeking a career in the banking and finance industry or who are already employed in the banking and finance industry and are seeking a relevant tertiary qualification on a part-time basis. In addition to a core of business foundation units, the course provides a specialist study in a number of key functional areas of relevance to financial institutions and markets This course is generally open only to candidates who have reached the age of 23 years and over.

The course is normally offered on a part-time basis and is of six years duration. A part-time candidate is expected to undertake two units per semester.

Advanced standing (credit for work done elsewhere)

In addition to part one, section five of the degree regulations, the following credit transfers have been standardised for the Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance):

• Holders of a completed certificate IV in a business-related area from a recognised TAFE institute may apply for credit for up to a maximum of four units.
• Holders of a completed diploma or advanced diploma in a business- related area from a recognised TAFE institute may apply for credit for up to a maximum of eight units.

Mode of offering

The course is taught off-campus. Course administration is the responsibility of the Department of Accounting and Finance, Caulfield campus.

Professional accreditation

The degree satisfies the educational requirements for senior associate membership of the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance. Holders of the degree who have not completed the two years employment in the banking and finance industry required for senior associate membership are eligible for associate membership in the interim.

Course structure

Inner core

The following six units are compulsory:

• AFF1110 Accounting for financial decision making
• BTF1010 Commercial law
• ECF1100/ECF2100 Microeconomics
• ETX1100 Business statistics
• MGF1010 Managing people and organisations
• MKF1120 Marketing theory and practice

Outer core

The following six units are nominated:

• AFF2051 Financial modelling
• AFF2631 Financial management
• BTF2601 Banking law
• ECF1200/ECF2200 Macroeconomics
• ETX2121 Data analysis in business
• MGF3401 Strategic management

Strand

The following six units are compulsory for students in the Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance):

• AFF1300 Money and capital markets
• AFF2401 Commercial banking and finance
• AFF3121 Investments and portfolio management
• AFF3651 Treasury management
• AFF3331 International banking and finance
• AFF3841 Lending decisions

Electives

In addition to the above 18 units in the 144-point program, students must choose six electives from any discipline within any faculty, subject to approval from other faculties.

The new course structure introduces greater flexibility and the following additional regulations must be observed:

• The number of first-year-level units must not exceed 10 (60 credit points).
• A minimum of six third-year-level units (36 credit points) of which at least four must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering the program.
• At least two (12 credit points) of the open electives must be taken outside the main field of study.
