This course, offered by the Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development (MIRD) through the Education Program of Reproductive Biology, is an intensive one-year, full-time laboratory-based course. The Master of Clinical Embryology provides candidates with the essential postgraduate knowledge and skills necessary to contribute competently to the human infertility clinical services. Theoretical and practical skills are presented in the broader context of quality control procedures required to ensure maximum success in a clinical human IVF laboratory. The regulations that control these endeavours are also presented. On successful completion of the course, students can graduate with the Master of Clinical Embryology.
Applicants must have a medical degree, veterinary science degree, Bachelor of Science degree with honours or the equivalent professional experience in embryology or reproductive biology gained following a pass degree.
The course consists of eight units, six of which involve lectures accompanied by tutorials, seminars, journal reviews, discussion groups, some site visits and case study analysis. The other two units consist of practical works and statistical methods. Beginning in February and continuing until the end of November, this course is very intensive, with a week's break over Easter and then another in July. Weekend and evening work in the laboratory is also required.
Assessment is via journal review presentations, 2500 and 3000-word essays, written examinations and tests for practical competence.
