Graduate Diploma in Mental Health for Teaching Professions


General information

This two-year graduate diploma is offered jointly by the Department of Psychological Medicine and the Faculty of Education. The course is geared to providing teaching and allied staff both theoretical and practical information on mental health and emotional development together with practical information on the use of such understanding in the classroom, and school settings. The two-year structure provides a basic understanding of mental health issues on which specialised counselling and group dynamic skills can be based.

The course overall underlines and supports the central role of the teacher in the development of optimal mental health in the school population. The first year (certificate) is available via off-campus learning only, with the second year (diploma) available on-campus only. An undergraduate Bachelor of Education, Psychology or equivalent degree are prerequisites for entry to the graduate certificate level. Successful completion of the graduate certificate is required for progression to the graduate diploma level of the course.

Assessment includes a combination of written essays, coursework participation and occasional special projects.
