Counselling techniques for members of the teaching profession (12 points)

Synopsis: On completion of this unit students will have acquired a knowledge of practical counselling skills and had some experience in practicing them. They will also learn about the phases of change which individuals go through in the process of first becoming aware of a problem to its resolution. Since the counselling of students raises questions related to development, students will gain some knowledge of personality development and how different personal styles affect counselling.

Assessment: A class presentation of a case including an analysis of the theoretical issues raised by the case + An outline of suitable counselling strategies and an account of the phases of change observed in the case + An essay in which an aspect of counselling theory will be presented and related to case material
