Master of Education (Literacy Studies)


General information

The Master of Education (Literacy Studies) is designed to meet the needs of teachers, lecturers, trainers, educational administrators, policymakers and parents. It is of particular interest to a broad spectrum of educators who wish to develop specialist knowledge and leadership expertise in the field of literacy studies.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must hold either an approved three-year bachelors degree and an approved fourth year of study, or an approved four-year bachelors degree, or have qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Research thesis
The research core unit is a corequisite for the research thesis. It may be taken concurrently with the research thesis or completed prior to the commencement of the research thesis.

Length of course/workload required

The Master of Education (Literacy Studies) may be taken either full-time or part-time. It is expected that full-time candidates will complete all requirements within 18 months (three semesters) while part-time candidates should complete all requirements within three years. The expected number of study hours per week for a full-time student is 48.

Advanced standing (credits/exemptions)

Applicants contemplating admission to this course may seek formal credit or recognition of prior learning. Students who are trained Reading Recovery teachers may seek credit for one unit (12 credit points) toward the award of the masters degree. Applicants should apply for credit/RPL prior to enrolment. The Faculty of Education considers each application on its merit within the context of the faculty guidelines on credit transfer.
