Synopsis: This unit enables students to critically reflect on the ways in which social and educational research is used in a range of institutional settings, including schools and other organisations or enterprises. The unit provides guidance on how to read published research literature, how to develop an understanding of the path of prior research and how to integrate and summarise what is known in an area so that students might inform policy formulation and decision-making in their particular organisational setting.

Assessment: Assignment 1: This assignment has two parts: 1. Identification and description of a work-based problem or issue; and 2. An outline of the strategies to be used in gathering information for a literature search focusing on the specific work-based problem/issue. (1500 words) (40%) + Assignment 2: An essay reviewing the literature on a work-based problem or issue nominated by each student. (4500 words) 60%
