The Master of Counselling degree prepares graduates to practise as counsellors in a range of settings including hospitals, community centres, schools, tertiary institutions, private practices, industry, health-oriented facilities and other similar places.
Two streams will be offered for admission to the Master of Counselling program.
Four
years of APS approved study in psychology.
Students may be eligible to apply for articulation into the Master of
Psychology (Counselling) degree on the successful completion of the two
semester one units, EDF6501 (Counselling: theory and practice) and EDF6502
(Advanced psychological assessment).
Three
years of approved study in psychology, with a minimum of two years relevant
work experience or approved fourth year study.
This stream does not articulate into the Master of Psychology (Counselling)
degree.
Students will be advised at the time of offer of the stream for which they are
eligible. Selection into the program will be based on:
(a) qualifications
(b) academic merit
(c) referee reports and/or
(d) interviews.
For the Master of Counselling (stream A or B) it is compulsory for students to complete at least two one-week (35 hours) residential schools included in the following units:

Students who wish to keep the option of articulation into the Master of Psychology (Counselling) course, must complete all four one-week (35 hours) residential sessions.

The Master of Counselling may be taken only part-time. It is expected that the part-time candidates should complete all requirements within two years (four semesters). The expected number of study hours per week for a part-time student is 24.
Applicants contemplating admission to this course may seek formal credit or recognition of prior learning. Applicants should apply for credit/RPL prior to enrolment. The Faculty of Education considers each application on its merit within the context of the faculty guidelines on credit transfer.
