Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance)


General Information

International students (non-Australian citizens and residents) may apply for entry on a full-fee-paying basis. The annual fee based on a part-time load for an international student is approximately $1750 per unit (2002 fee).
Local students (Australian citizens and residents) may also apply for entry on a full-fee-paying basis. The annual fee based on a part-time load is $1600 per unit (2002 fee). These costs are subject to change - please check with enrolment officer.

Aims

The Department of Accounting and Finance offers the opportunity for people unable to attend formal tertiary institutions the unique study option to gain this highly sought-after degree course by off-campus learning.
This course is principally designed for students seeking a career in the banking and finance industry or who are already employed in the banking and finance industry and are seeking a relevant tertiary qualification on a part-time basis. In addition to a core of business foundation units, the course provides specialist study in a number of key functional areas of relevance to financial institutions and markets. Professional recognition

This degree satisfies the educational requirements for senior associate membership of the Australian Institute of Banking and Finance. Holders of the degree who have not completed the two years employment in the banking and finance industry required for senior associate membership are eligible for associate membership in the interim.

Entry requirements

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

Satisfactory completion of the VCE, with English (any) units 3 and 4 with a study score of at least 25, plus mathematics (any) at unit 3 and 4 level, and a study score of at least 20 in any two other VCE studies.

Comparable qualifications

Applicants may also satisfy entry requirements with qualifications equivalent to the VCE, eg TAFE qualifications (the first year of a TAFE Advanced Diploma (formerly Associate Diploma or equivalent TAFE qualification) or comparable Year 12 qualifications, including International Baccalaureate or other approved tertiary study.

Special entry - mature age

Applications are also invited from mature-age applicants who, although they may not hold the required Year 12 qualification, may meet entry requirements by undertaking prior studies on a single-unit basis.

Special requirements

Selection

This program is generally open to applicants, except in exceptional circumstances, who have reached the age of 23 and over by 1 January in the year of possible commencement. To successfully complete the units to a high standard, it is becoming increasingly essential to have access to a computer (at least a Pentium 166 with Windows 95 or later), as a portion of the learning is via interactive tutorial disks. Students in second year undertaking ETX1100B (Business statistics) will need to have access to an IBM-compatible computer and the spreadsheet package EXCEL (version 97 or above) and will require a calculator, preferably one with statistical keys.

Course structure

The course is offered on a part-time basis only and is of six years duration by off-campus learning. Students are expected to undertake two units per semester, and pass the equivalent of 24 semester units to be awarded the degree. The duration of each semester is 13 weeks.

Candidates can select from a wide range of business-related units offered through the Faculty of Business and Economics, or other units as approved by the course director.

Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of assignments and final examination for each unit. Examination weighting ranges from 60 per cent to 70 per cent and generally a pass is required in the final examination to pass the unit.
