Foundations of contemporary physics

Synopsis: This unit provides the foundation for a major in physics. It consists of two 12-lecture sub-units, Applications of Quantum Mechanics, and Statistical Physics, a 6-hour unit Professional Studies 1, and laboratory work. The key areas for each sub-unit are: (1) Applications of Quantum Mechanics: perturbation theory applied to atomic systems and radiation; (2) Statistical Physics: entropy, classical and quantum statistics with application to paramagnets, classical and quantum gases including Bose condensation; (3) Professional Studies 1: professional responsibility and practice, including a laboratory visit, and Laboratory work: experimental and/or computational work on relevant topics.

Assessment: Examinations (2 x 1.5 hours): 48% + Laboratory work: 25% + Assignments: 27%
