Synopsis: Component 1: Advanced spoken and written German Component 2: An examination of the cultural and social history of the German-speaking world from the period 1848 to 1945 through lectures and selected readings, along with an introduction into the basics of text analysis.

Assessment: Essay (1000 words): 20% + Class paper: 15% + Test (45mins): 15% + Exam (1 hour): 20% + 4 homework exercises: 20% + Oral assessment: 10%
