This course is specifically designed for professionals in the workplace who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in preventive occupational health practice. The certificate provides the basic knowledge in legal OHS requirements and skills for competence in assessing and controlling workplace hazards. Graduates can seek careers in industry, government or independent practice in occupational health, human resources management, safety management or training. The graduate certificate articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Occupational and Environmental Health and then the Master of Occupational and Environmental Health or the Master of Public Health.
Applicants must have a medical degree, a bachelors degree with honours or graduate diploma, or a three-year bachelors degree with relevant professional experience in a health-related field. The department will individually assess applications from students without a three-year degree but with relevant professional experience.
Access to the internet is required, however, access to personal computing facilities is desirable but not essential.
All units have a 20-hour block of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne over four days during the semester. The teaching sessions involve interactive tutorials, problem-based learning, case studies and workshops. Experiential learning through worksite visits and student presentations is provided, and also the opportunity to increase understanding and application of the course material through discussion with unit experts and experienced practitioners.
The Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health comprises 24 credit points. It consists of four core units taken over a 12-month period of two part-time semesters. It is not offered on a full-time basis.
Assessment includes written assignment work and examinations.
Advanced standing may be granted for the core units where the student supplies documentary evidence of successfully completing a similar unit at a similar level elsewhere, within the last seven years. Any candidate may, with the approval of the course coordinator and the faculty, be granted credit for up to 50 per cent of their course. All advanced standing applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
