Course code: 2026 Course abbreviation: BCom/BEd The following describes
the course structure to be introduced in 2001 For details of the old
structure, refer to the 2000 university handbook
The following should be read in conjunction with the statement on the Bachelor
of Commerce and the Bachelor of Education in the Education section of this
handbook.
The double-degree course of Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Education
requires a minimum of four-and-a-half years of full-time study, or
five-and-a-half years for a degree with honours, or the equivalent in part-time
study. Entry to this combination is based on the entry requirements for the
Bachelor of Commerce degree. Students must complete subjects to the value of a
minimum of 212 credit points over the length of the course, of which 108 points
should come from subjects offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics
(Clayton) and 104 points from the Faculty of Education. The education component
includes a program of field visits. The course structure is shown in
chart 16 in the section ´Charts of degree structures'.
While there is a degree of flexibility in the commerce component of the course
structure, students must normally complete the eight compulsory first-year
commerce subjects in the first two years of the course.
(a) 108 points must be chosen from subjects offered by the Faculty of
Business and Economics (Clayton) and must include:
(i) Completion of the following compulsory subjects:
(ii) Completion of a major in
a discipline or field of study of the Faculty of Business and Economics. This
requires students to complete 48 points of study in a single discipline or
field of study with at least 12 points at each of second and third-year level.
Disciplines are defined by department prefixes and fields of study are those
sets of related subjects that may be defined in the catalogue of courses and
subjects.
(iii) A maximum of eight first-year-level subjects (48 points). In order
to meet this requirement, students are able to undertake the second-year
versions of the appropriate number of compulsory subjects.
(iv) In order to meet the prerequisites for methods and practice of
teaching, at least four economics subjects and four accounting subjects, or at
least four economics subjects and four management subjects.
(b) 96 points must be chosen from the Faculty of Education, and must
include:
(i) Completion of the following compulsory subjects: EDF1301, EDF1302,
EDF2001, EDF2002, EDF3001, EDF3002, EDF3003, EDF3004, EDF4001.
(ii) Completion of two 12-point teaching methods subjects.
(iii) Completion of three education electives.
Students must have their program of study approved by the course coordinator or
the course coordinator's nominee prior to commencement of the relevant year.
