R Morrison 4 points + 26 lectures, 26 hours of tutorial and laboratory hours + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: ECE3502 or ECS3351 + Prohibitions: ELE4251, ECE5507, ECS5354 Synopsis: The nature of energy supply systems, energy resource and demand. Generation of electricity using conventional sources (non-renewables). Environmental impacts of non-renewable sources of energy. Generation of electricity using renewable energy technologies; solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, hydro power, fuel cell, wind power, co-generation, biomass technologies, storage devices, ocean thermal, geothermal, enabling technologies, details of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) energy, Solar PV-Hybrid power systems. Optimization of size of components in solar PV hybrid systems. Cost calculation, performance prediction and performance improvement of solar PV systems. Demand side management. Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 70% + Laboratory and assignment work: 30% |
