This course is offered through distance education by the Department of General Practice. The objectives of the degree are:

• to foster general practitioner critical appraisal skills in reference to the nature of the discipline, its daily practice and its literature and research basis
• to provide a course of study for general practitioners wishing to expand their knowledge and skills in areas relevant to general practice, to meet their own personal and professional needs as well as the needs of the patients and the community in which they practise
• to enlarge the pool of potential general practice teachers and researchers which will help enhance the quality and status of general practice teaching and research among professionals and in the wider community.

Opportunities exist to upgrade the masters degree. The graduate diploma is conducted over two years part-time and applicants must have a minimum of two years postgraduate experience and be currently registered by the medical board in their respective state, or have a qualification which is registrable in a state of the Commonwealth.

Course structure

The course consists of two compulsory subjects:

• MFM2000 Principles of general practice
• MFM2006 Introduction to research methods

and three elective subjects or a mix of electives and modules chosen from the following:

• MFM1003 Occupational health and safety

• MFM1006 Women's health
• MFM1007 Child health
• MFM1008 Practice management

• MFM1010 ECG
• MFM1011 Issues in general practice prescribing
• MFM1012 Community geriatrics
• MFM1014 Musculoskeletal medicine
• MFM1017 Ethics
• MFM1019 Opthalmology
• DFM3001 Menopause
• DFM3002 Stress management
• DFM3003 Pain management
• DFM3004 Palliative care
• DFM3005 Preventive care
• DFM3006 Issues in general practice prescribing

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework participation, assignments with occasional special projects and formal examinations from time to time.
