Master of Education (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages - International)

Target group

This course is designed to meet the needs of teachers or prospective teachers from overseas who are four-year qualified and who do not wish to teach in Australia. For local students who do wish to have the option of also teaching in Australia, it would be an alternative to the Master of Education (TESOL) if the advanced practicum (with field placement) were taken and the applicant were deemed already qualified as a teacher (as per local requirements).

Special admission requirements

A minimum of four years of approved university study is required. For this qualification to be recognised by employment bodies in Australia, there is an additional requirement of teacher training recognised in Australia and students would need to complete the following practicum subject during the course:

English proficiency requirements

Education in full English medium in an English-speaking country or
one of the following:

Course outline

Core subjects
Elective subjects
Group A - general TESOL-oriented subjects

Up to three subjects chosen from:

Group B - research methodology subjects (a maximum of two of these may be taken)
Research subject

Students wishing to undertake a research project option must consult the course coordinator.

Research project

Students undertaking the program of studies nominated by the Department of Education, Employment and Training will complete a 10,000-word project.
