Master of Business (Accounting)


General information

This course is designed to enhance and develop the knowledge and skills of accounting graduates in public practice, industry and academia. The degree encompasses studies at an advanced level in financial and managerial accounting, auditing, corporate and international finance and investments, and electives chosen from masters-level subjects offered in banking, marketing and management. Students attain an advanced conceptual understanding of the fields of accounting and finance, complemented by a wide range of practical applications and case studies. Students also gain insight into research methodologies and techniques which extend and support their learning and expose them to the contemporary issues and problems confronting modern accountants and finance specialists.
Applicants need to have completed, with an average grade of credit or above, a pass degree with a major in the discipline of accounting, banking, or finance, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution. Students who have completed the Master of Practising Accounting, or an honours degree in accounting, or a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting, or Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management, may also apply for admission to this masters degree. Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of eight credit exemptions for subjects considered to be equivalent to particular subjects in the course of study. This is a fee-paying course. Candidates should consult the Department of Accounting and Finance as to the 2001 course fee. Course fees are set and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.

Course structure

The course consists of 16 subjects:

First year (eight subjects)
Advanced accounting stream

Financial management stream

(b) Four subjects (or subjects with an equivalent point value) chosen from those listed in (a) above (and not previously selected) or from 4000-level subjects offered by the Department of Accounting and Finance. If AFF4050 (Research project) is chosen, then corequisite subjects AFF4060 (Research methods I) and AFF4061 (Research methods II) must be taken as well.
(c) Remaining subjects chosen from subjects offered by the Department of Accounting and Finance with a subject code with a numeric prefix of ´4' or ´5'. Subject selection will be undertaken by students in consultation with the course director.
