Bachelor of Computing


General information

Aims

The Bachelor of Computing course aims to produce graduates who satisfy the computing needs of industry, government and commerce. It has three majors with different focuses.
The system development major focuses on the analysis of user requirements and the design, development and management of computer-based information systems and applications.
The business systems major focuses on the use of computers and information systems to solve complex problems in business and government organisations. Students graduate with a capacity to relate their university studies to the world of business.
The multimedia technology major focuses on the use, design and development of network and multimedia systems and applications in industry, business, entertainment and government.

Course duration

The Bachelor of Computing normally requires six years of part-time distance education study to complete.

Entry requirements

Formal entry requirements are detailed in the section on entry level in this book. For the Bachelor of Computing, students are normally required to have completed a Year 12 program equivalent to the Victorian Certificate of Education, including studies in English and Mathematics. Mature-age or disadvantaged applicants are assessed on the basis of their employment and overall educational background. The lack of formal qualifications should not discourage inquiry. Students who do not meet formal entry requirements may be able to qualify for admission by successfully completing two approved units on a single-unit enrolment basis.

Course structure - system development major

To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Computing with a major in system development, a student must complete 144 points of study, comprising 96 points of compulsory units and 48 points of other units, as outlined below. Each unit is worth six points, apart from GCO3800, which is worth 12 points.

Students take at least 12 points of third-year computing electives from:

and up to 30 points of electives from a list approved by the head of school. Of the 48 points of elective units, at least 24 points must be in units at second-year level or above.

Each unit is worth six points, apart from GCO3700, which is worth 12 points.

Credits/exemptions

Appropriate credits may be granted for approved studies completed at a recognised post-secondary institution, including other universities, TAFE institutes, and the Open Learning Agency of Australia.

Completed applications

Completed applications are to be forwarded to the Student Matters Officer, Gippsland School of Computing and Information Technology, Monash University, Churchill, Victoria 3842, by 22 September 2000 to be considered for a first-round offer. Applications received after that date, but before 24 November 2000, will be considered for a second round of offers. Later applications may be considered if places are available.
