Course code: 1802
The double degree allows students to combine the study of journalism with that of social welfare. The degree is structured to ensure that graduates have the necessary capabilities and understandings to work in a wide variety of public and private organisations requiring communication and social welfare backgrounds (eg organisations engaged in in-house journalism, in public relations and promotions or in lobbying).

Entry requirements

In addition to meeting standard entry requirements, all applicants are required to complete a Social Welfare Course Administration Form. This form can be obtained from the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences. Applicants will be short-listed on the basis of information contained in this form, for a more detailed selection process. Applicants are strongly advised that academic criteria are not the only ones for entry into the course. Other factors such as work experience and life experience, personal qualities and maturity are taken into account.

Professional recognition

This course is recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.

Course structure

A candidate for the double degree must fulfil the following requirements to receive the awards of Bachelor of Arts (Journalism)/Bachelor of Social Welfare:
(a) complete at least 192 but not more than 216 points
(b) complete the prescribed sequence in social welfare subjects and the prescribed sequence in journalism (52 to 60 points depending on the study mode)
(c) complete the prescribed core subjects
(d) undertake additional prescribed studies to complete the 192 points needed for the degrees.
