Introduction to Koorie society

Synopsis: Definition of a Koorie and the state of race relations in Australia. The structure of traditional Koorie society, especially the importance of Dreaming systems of belief, the maintenance of social order, the role of ceremonies and rites, and the division of labour. The nature of frontier conflict and the way white settlement affected Koorie society. Contemporary issues including the importance of land rights, the impact of the white legal system, health and housing, and the drafting of a treaty.

Assessment: Diploma of Koorie Studies (first essay, 1000 words, 30%; second essay, 1500 words, 30%; overview essay, 2000 words, 40%): 100% + Bachelor degree (essay, 2000 words, 40%; two journals, 30% each): 100%
