MSC4000

Materials science honours

Associate Professor Trevor Finlayson

48 points - First/second semester - Clayton - Prerequisites: MSC3011 and MSC3022

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will have studied various processes used in the syntheses of advanced materials; undertaken lecture programs in consultation with the subject coordinator and the supervisor, with the purposes of supplying necessary supporting knowledge for the research project or broadening the student's knowledge base in materials science; had experience in carrying out an original research project and in presenting the results in the forms of a scientific poster paper, a research seminar and a minor thesis.

Synopsis Students who have performed satisfactorily in the prerequisite subjects may pursue advanced studies leading to the degree Bachelor of Science with honours. Lecture programs are selected from fourth-year science and materials engineering units; their combined weighting will be equivalent to six physics fourth-year units. Selection of units will be in conjunction and with the approval of the coordinator. Advanced materials syntheses will normally be compulsory. Students undertake an original research project, the choice of which is made in consultation with the coordinator and a project supervisor.

Assessment Lecture programs: 50% - Project: 50%
