Objectives This subject will introduce students to the care of patients with special problems and the provision of appropriate patient care during imaging examinations of the gastrointestinal, urinary, hepato-biliary and cardiovascular systems. This subject builds upon the foundation established in the first year radiographic professional skills subjects and draws upon the knowledge and understanding developed in the context of the first semester second year subjects RAD2031 (Pharmacology) and RAD2011 (Radiographic imaging and methods 3). This subject is also designed to interface with RAD2052 (Medical imaging and methods 1 (DVI) and digital imaging processing 1).
Synopsis The emphasis will be upon patient assessment, patient management and ethical practice. The subject covers the following topics: Patients with special needs - geriatrics and paediatrics and accident and emergency. Patients with acute abdominal distress. Patients with a communicable disease and the intubated patient. Patient care for contrast examinations of the gastrointestinal, urinary, hepatobiliary and cardiovascular systems. Catheterisation and its application in contrast examinations of the gastrointestinal, urinary, hepatobilirary and cardiovascular systems. The concept of surgical asepsis. Infection control in contrast imaging examinations. Venepuncture.
