Acute care in the community: Rural and remote care

Objectives On completion of this subject the student should be able to describe trends in health care leading to the expansion of home health care for the acutely ill client across the lifespan; discuss clinical management of clients across the lifespan who are cared for in the home environment; describe appropriate, culturally relevant, nursing interventions within a collaborative model which focuses on the person; identify issues pertinent to home health care; identify issues pertinent rural/remote nursing.

Synopsis This subject aims to provide the student with an introduction to more advanced areas of acute care within the home in rural and remote environments. It builds on the core content of the Nursing Practice subjects and provides and opportunity for further theoretical and practical knowledge experience. This subject prepares the student to care for clients who are acutely ill but are not within the traditional hospital environment. Studies will be undertaken in relation to clients who may be nursed in the home, and/or in palliative care, and who may live in a regional or a rural/remote area.
