Nursing practice 5: Family and reproductive health nursing

6 points · 5 hours per week (lectures, tutorials, labs) plus 75 hours clinical · Second semester · Gippsland and Peninsula · Prerequisites: NUR1101, NUR1102, NUR2103, NUR1301, NUR1302

Objectives On completion of this subject students are expected to demonstrate sound knowledge of a range of health problems which must be considered when caring for individuals within the context of family life across the lifespan; apply the principles of primary health care to individuals within the context of gender and family life; use the clinical reasoning process to assess individual client care needs using a lifespan developmental framework; identify and apply appropriate nursing therapeutics for individuals within the context of family life in the clinical fields of maternity nursing, paediatric nursing, and sexual and reproductive health nursing; demonstrate an understanding of the importance of health teaching and health promotion in nursing practice within the context of gender and family life; identify the health and support services available to individuals within the context of family life; demonstrate the achievement of competence in the provision of care to male and female clients in acute and non-acute clinical settings related to sexual and reproductive nursing; demonstrate the achievement of competence in the provision of care to infants and small children in non-acute clinical settings.

Synopsis The purpose of this subject is to introduce the family context to nursing practice. Families and individuals within families move through a variety of lifespan developmental stages contributing to a wide range of wellness and illness states requiring skilled nursing intervention. This subject will provide an opportunity for the student to explore the health of individuals within the context of family life, using a lifespan developmental framework. It will introduce the theoretical background necessary to prepare the student to practice with beginning competence in the areas of maternity nursing, paediatric nursing, sexual and reproductive health nursing. Nursing practice skills in health teaching, and health promotion are applied for the purpose of preparing clients for self care and caregiving roles.

Assessment Written assignment: 40% · Examination: 60% · Clinical Assessment: pass/fail · 100% attendance at clinical placement is compulsory; students must pass both the theoretical and the clinical components in order to pass this subject.
