Objectives On completion of the subject it is expected that students will be able to analyse the factors which contribute to psychiatric disorders; demonstrate a knowledge of mental health problems and common psychiatric disorders; demonstrate a knowledge of a range of psychotherapeutic interventions; use a range of psychotherapeutic interventions; identify the factors that contribute to the mental health of individuals within family units; apply the knowledge of these factors in the care of clients and families of clients with mental health problems; assist clients, families and groups to achieve satisfying and productive patterns of living through health teaching; demonstrate a knowledge of the Victorian Mental Health Act 1986 and the Mental Health Amendment Act 1995; discuss the ethical issues which pertain to psychiatric and mental health nursing; conduct a mental status assessment for a patient with a psychiatric disorder; use a range of psychotherapeutic interventions; communicate effectively with people who are experiencing disturbances of thoughts, feelings and behaviour; indentify psychosocial stressors which may precipitate 'disturbed' behaviour and suggest (and where possible, implement) measures to reduce such stressors.
Synopsis This subject will provide an opportunity for students to develop fundamental knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to the restoration and maintenance of optimal mental health and recovery from mental illness. Students are expected to learn to assess mental health problems and to identify the coping abilities of individuals and families, and to care for people with psychiatric problems. Emphasis is placed upon empowerment of the individual and care giver using the stress/vulnerability model and family based management. As part of the communication stream students spend time discussing the stressors involved in being part of a psychiatric team and ways of coping with these stressors.
Assessment Written assignment: 50% · Formal examination: 50% · Clinical Assessment: pass/fail · 100% attendance at clinical placement is compulsory · Students must pass both the theoretical and the clinical components in order to pass this subject.
