Nursing practice 7: Community nursing

Objectives On completion of this subject it is expected that students will be able to describe the theoretical frameworks that purport to describe community health nursing; demonstrate an understanding of lifestyle challenges faced by individuals and groups in the community with regard to their illnesses, disabilities, and normal lifespan development issues; describe the services and support that are necessary to promote home based management of selected clients and groups with health needs/problems; examine the issues that affect funding and provision of services in community care; expand knowledge and understanding of ethical and legal questions in the provision of community nursing services; demonstrate increased interpersonal, teaching and care planning skills to creatively and sensitively address the needs of individuals and groups for these situations; develop an awareness of the need for, and management of, interdisciplinary interventions; demonstrate an abililty to work effectively and collaboratively with professionals and lay support workers in community health care; demonstrate nursing skills associated with the home base management of a range of conditions; demonstrate safe clinical practice based on sound theoretical knowledge in community nursing.

Synopsis This subject aims to develop the students understanding and ability to meet the health and illness needs of clients and groups in the community. It promotes awareness of support services available in the community. It also aims to develop the students understanding of the psychosocial impact on, and the life situation of, the individual facing continual physical and/or intellectual challenges. This subject extends prior learning by providing students with a study of the theoretical frameworks and development of practice skills associated with community health nursing. The broad basis of community health practice is emphasised with students being made familiar with home base management of a range of conditions, care coordination issues, and models of health promotion and health education.
