Therapeutics and medication

Objectives On completion of this subject students are expected to be able to identify and understand the basic principles of pharmacology and therapeutic drug monitoring as they relate to nursing; the principles of drug treatment in disease states, resuscitation and poisoning; the problems of drug administration, including drug interactions and the principles of drug use in neonates, children and the elderly; demonstrate a beginning understanding of the philosophy of healing by integrating concepts and ideas of how various non-drug therapies function for the individual; gain a beginning understanding of the method, aim, value and purpose of a range of non-drug therapies; identify how a number of appropriate non-drug and complementary therapies may be incorporated into mainstream health care.

Synopsis This subject allows the student to explore the knowledge base necessary for safe practice in the handling, administration and storage of drugs as part of the overall plan of care of clients; develop the ability to monitor and evaluate the outcomes of drug therapy for individuals; comply with the Nurses Board of Victoria regulations regarding drug administration by students. Therapeutics and medication will be the foundation subject to facilitate students in their application of drug therapies throughout the remainder of the course. Students will also be given the opportunity to examine the philosophy and methods of other health practitioners and develop an appreciation of their contribution to health care; develop a knowledge base sufficient to appraise a range of healing practices and their role in health care and learn to incorporate a range of non-drug therapies into their nursing practice.

Assessment Seminar presentation: 15% · Two assignments: 20% each · Examination: 45% · Students must pass both the therapeutics and the medication components in order to pass this subject.
