Introduction to course

This course is for teachers, educational administrators, and other health and human resources professionals who wish to commence postgraduate studies in special education but who do not wish at this stage to commit themselves to long term study.

Objectives

The objectives of the Postgraduate Certificate of Special Education are to enable teachers, educational administrators and other health and human resources professionals to develop knowledge and understanding and the practical skills essential for supporting individuals with special needs. Upon successful completion of this course students should have:

Admission requirements

The course is available to four-year qualified candidates who hold a university degree or its equivalent.

Credit provision

The subjects taught in the Postgraduate Certificate of Special Education are assessed at a masters level, hence students can receive credit of twelve points for each subject. These subjects can also be taken for credit by students for the masters by coursework programs. Candidates who successfully complete the Postgraduate Certificate of Special Education will receive twenty-four credit points towards a masters degree.

The completion of two of the following subjects of study totalling twenty-four points will lead to the award of Postgraduate Certificate of Special Education:

Length of course/workload required

This course may be taken on campus by part-time study over one academic year. Each subject is of one semester length and the option of summer school study will be provided for some subjects. The expected number of hours per week for a part-time student is twenty-four.
