Historical perspectives in Australian education

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed a sound understand of the skills of historical analysis; knowledge of how historical analysis informs educational debate; the ability to apply historical skills to their professional practice; an understanding of the connection between the present and the past in educational theory and practice.

Synopsis This subject will outline major issues in Australian education since 1788 with special emphasis on the development of education systems in Victoria. Further emphasis will be placed upon the origins of more recent structuring and curriculum initiatives such as the 'Schools of the Future' program, the curriculum and standards frameworks series, the Victorian certificate of education and the unified national system in higher education.

Assessment Exercise in historical analysis: (500 words): 10% - Essay (4000 words): 60% - Examination (2 hours): 30%
