Education ideas

Dr K E Stead

6 points - 3 hours per week - First semester - Gippsland

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have acquired knowledge and understanding of a range of ideas which have influenced, and continue to influence, the nature of schooling, practice and thinking about education in our society; and the skills to publish in-house at least one essay on a contemporary educational issue.

Synopsis This subject has as its focus those ideas which are central to 'education' in society. Students will examine the different perceptions and beliefs about what it is to be educated, how education should occur, who should be educated, when education should occur and who should educate, from several perspectives, such as historical, cultural, political and pedagogical. Various key articles will be presented and discussed with students to enable them to develop further their own ideas about their roles as future educators or as educated citizens in society. Students will develop a folder with these and other relevant articles together with their analyses of them. This folder will provide a cumulative record of the development of their ideas and will be assessed at the end of the semester.

Assessment Folder of educational ideas: 40% - Class presentation: 20% - 'Opinion' paper suitable for electronic publication (1200 words): 40% - Hurdle requirements: 80% attendance and participation in class and satisfactory standard in all assessment items
