Teaching and curriculum studies: English and mathematics

6 points - 4 hours per week - First semester - Gippsland - Prerequisite: GEC1101

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to provide a rationale for the inclusion of studies of English and mathematics in the primary school curriculum; and plan, deliver and assess a series of lessons in both English and mathematics. Students should also be familiar with current school English and mathematics programs and those developed, or planned, on the 'Schools of the Future' and the curriculum and standards framework documents.

Synopsis This subject develops knowledge, skills and attitudes about teaching and learning in primary schools in the key learning areas (KLAs) of English and mathematics. Students will explore a range of appropriate teaching techniques, become familiar with evaluation techniques for ascertaining and understanding pupil learning needs and strategies, and develop, teach and evaluate an appropriate sequence of lessons in both English and mathematics.

Assessment Two written assignments (3000 words total): 40% and 20% - Final examination: 40% - Satisfactory practicum required
