Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed a sound understanding of the skills of logical analysis; knowledge of how epistemology, metaphysics and ethics advise educational debate; the ability of applying philosophical skills to improved professional practice; the ability to make rational professional decisions under conditions of uncertainty; an understanding of the rational connection between theory and practice in education.
Synopsis In this subject students will be introduced to logical calculus, epistemology, metaphysics and moral philosophy in so far as these key and central elements in philosophy have material bearing on how to reflect on the principles and issues of education theory and practice. The subject introduces logic, metaphysics, epistemology and moral philosophy, in turn, and shows how being able to reason in these modes makes a critical contribution of understanding the limits and range of educational practice.
Assessment Exercise in informal logical analysis (500 words): 10% - 2 essays (1500 words each): 30% each - Examination (2 hours): 30%
