Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed an understanding of the purposes of curriculum development; be able to describe and evaluate different orientations to the curriculum; be capable of participating in small group curriculum planning tasks; have acquired an appreciation of the elements of curriculum development and their interaction; be able to apply their developing knowledge of curriculum to the analysis and understanding of important issues in schooling in Australia.
Synopsis Students will be introduced to the basic ideas of curriculum development, particularly as it is practised in schools. They will analyse the three major orientations to curriculum and will be encouraged to develop a wide perspective on schooling in society. Students will become familiar with the various elements involved in curriculum planning and how these interact. A series of current issues affecting Australian schooling such as new curriculum projects, greater autonomy, vocational education and the increased range of strategies for assessment will then be examined.
Assessment Essay (1000 words): 20% - Project (1500 words): 40% - Examination: 40%
