Practicum studies (early childhood)

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have developed knowledge and understanding of a variety of methods of curriculum development and planning in early childhood settings (with an emphasis on meeting the needs of 3-5 year olds); demonstrated skill at planning, implementing, evaluating and reflecting on developmentally appropriate programs; ability to work effectively as a member of a team; and demonstrated competence in carrying out a range of administrative tasks associated with working in an early childhood service. Students should also have developed an attitude of enjoyment in teaching, a willingness to undertake teaching and management tasks on practicum placements; and reflection, confidentiality and professionalism in regard to teaching practice.

Synopsis Strand 'A' of this subject will consist of lectures and tutorials and will further develop students' knowledge and understandings of leading a team in integrated curriculum development and planning to meet the needs of individual and groups of children (3-5 year olds). Issues of developmental and cultural appropriateness will be emphasised as well as learning as a process and the role of the teacher in facilitating the process. Strand 'B' of this subject will consist of twenty-five days of supervised practicum within an early childhood centre for 3-5 year old children, during which students will demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes of a competent, reflective teacher in charge.

Assessment Two assignments (2000 words each): 50% - Hurdle requirements: satisfactory standard in practicum and reflective journal
