Curriculum Studies: Mathematics 2

6 points - 3 hours per week - Second semester - Gippsland - Prerequisites: GEC2101 Teaching and curriculum studies: English and mathematics

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should be able to provide a rationale for the inclusion of mathematics in the primary school curriculum; be able to identify the nature and extent of children's understanding of mathematics concepts and skills; be familiar with current curriculum guidelines including the Curriculum and Standards Framework; and be confident about planning, managing and assessing learning activities which develop children's understanding of mathematics concepts and processes.

Synopsis This subject develops knowledge, skills and attitudes about teaching and learning in primary schools in the key learning area of mathematics. Topics investigated include problem solving, the use of new technology (including calculators and computers), cooperative learning strategies, gender and cultural issues, and evaluating and reporting curriculum outcomes.

Assessment One written assignment (3000 words): 100% - resource folder (hurdle requirement) - satisfactory field work report (hurdle requirement).
