Risk management and emergency response

6 points - 3 hours per week - Second semester - Gippsland - Prerequisite: EDG1503 or approved equivalent

Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have acquired: a working knowledge of the legal requirements in the conduct of sport and outdoor recreation; sound injury prevention philosophy and techniques; practical ability in first-aid response in the outdoors; an awareness of and ability to treat minor sports injuries; knowledge and skills in applying risk management in outdoor pursuits.

Synopsis This subject aims to equip students with a range of skills in risk management, injury prevention and first aid practice as well as a knowledge of the legal requirements of conducting sport and outdoor recreation activities. Students will be given the opportunity to complete the level 3 First Aid and Safety Certificate (outdoor response) and complete a basic sports injuries treatment certificate. Practical application of theories and skills associated with risk management in outdoor pursuits, selected from bushwalking, climbing/abseiling, cross-country skiing and kayaking (including sea kayaking) will be incorporated into this subject.

Assessment Journal and assignment (2000 words): 50% - Class test: 50% - Satisfactory participation and demonstration of first aid and injury treatment
