Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject, students should have acquired an understanding of the influences in the development of outdoor recreation and education in Australia; have developed an overview of outdoor recreation and education pursuits; be aware of the safety requirements for activities in the outdoors; have developed competencies and an understanding of the current practices in a range of outdoor recreation pursuits.
Synopsis This subject will focus on the study of the philosophy, principles and practices related to a number of outdoor adventure pursuits. Students will identify the basis of the development of a range of activities conducted in Australia and more particularly the local region. Studies will include an awareness of the profession, delivery styles, tools, settings. The subject will allow students to identify the background and identify the professional roles in the industry. Pivotal to the course will be practical skill acquisition in a range of outdoor pursuits at the introductory level and will be selected from: bushwalking, climbing and abseiling, cross country and downhill skiing, canoeing and kayaking, rafting and surfing. Leadership styles, judgement and considerations will be explored as the basis for the practical component.
Assessment Class test: 40% - Assignment work and practical performance assessment: 60%
