This course has been designed specifically for those students who have completed an accounting-specific undergraduate degree or related discipline or have membership in a recognised professional accounting body, and who want to enhance and develop their knowledge and skills especially with a view to senior management responsibilities. The postgraduate diploma encompasses studies at an advanced level in financial and managerial accounting, finance, and investments. Students complement their learning of theoretical concepts by using a wide range of practical applications and case studies. Students also gain insight into research methodologies and techniques which extend and support their learning and expose them to the contemporary issues and problems confronting senior managers of modern enterprises.

Admission requirements

Applicants require a pass degree with a major in the discipline of accounting or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution or a recognised professional accounting qualification.

Fees

This is a fee-paying course. Candidates should refer to the Department of Accounting and Finance as to the 1999 course fee. Course fees are set and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.

Duration

The Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management is normally completed in two semesters of full-time study or three semesters of part-time study.

Mode of offering

Classes are offered on-campus at the Caulfield campus in two block teaching sessions Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at 6-10 pm and Saturday 9 am - 5 pm.

Credit for work done previously

Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of four credit exemptions for subjects considered to be equivalent to particular subjects in the course of study. Please refer to the course director for further details.

Course structure

A total of eight subjects is required.
(1) AFF4050 Research project (equivalent to two subjects), AFF4060 Research methods I and AFF4061 Research methods II, are compulsory;
(2) Two subjects chosen from AFF4010 (Advanced financial accounting), AFF4020 (Advanced management accounting), AFF4030 (Advanced finance), AFF4040 (Advanced investments);
(3) Two subjects chosen from those listed in (2) above (and not previously selected) or from subjects offered by the Department of Accounting and Finance with a subject code with a numeric prefix of '5'.

Progression to further studies

Students who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management with an average grade of credit or above may apply for admission to the Master of Business (Accounting).
