The Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting is designed specifically for those students who wish to meet the professional educational needs to complete the CPA program of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants (ASCPA).

Course objectives

The Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting requires the completion of eight subjects. It includes up to five subjects taken from the CPA program (required for the purposes of ASCPA qualification for full membership). Each subject is designed to provide educational support and extend the student's knowledge and skills in accounting. It also provides an opportunity to increase an understanding of managerial skills, particularly as they apply to accounting professionals and broaden the skills of accountants in business-related areas.

Admission requirements

Applicants require a pass degree with a major in accounting, or a recognised professional accounting qualification, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution.

Fees

This is a fee-paying course. Candidates should refer to the Department of Accounting and Finance as to the 1999 course fee. Course fees are set and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.

Duration

The Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting is normally completed in two semesters of full-time study or four semesters of part-time study.

Mode of offering

Teaching is offered on-campus at either the Clayton or Caulfield campuses of Monash University, depending on the particular subject.

Credit for work done previously

Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of five credit exemptions for subjects considered to be equivalent to particular subjects in the course of study. Please refer to the relevant course director for further details.

Professional recognition

Graduates will meet the academic requirements for admission as a member of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants.

Course structure

A total of eight subjects is required:
(a) five subjects chosen from

AFF5001 CPA - Core I
AFX5002 CPA - Core II
BTX5003 CPA - Taxation
AFX5004 CPA - Treasury
AFF5005 CPA - Management accounting
AFX5006 CPA - Auditing

(b) Minimum of one subject from

AFX4011 Business accounting I: concepts and techniques
AFX4012 Strategic policy and entrepreneurship
AFF4013 Financial reporting and statement analysis
AFF4014 Business accounting II: strategic issues

and/or subjects from an honours degree or equivalent in the department.
(c) Maximum of two subjects from faculty subjects in business and economics or approved business and economics subjects from external institutions.

Progression to further studies

Students who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting with an average grade of credit or above may apply for admission to other masters level courses.
